Alvin has a joint degree in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computer Science, and entered the patent profession in 2001, amidst the developing landscape of patentability of computer and software related inventions in the UK and Europe. He advises on patent rights for clients both in the U.K. and internationally.

His practice specialisation has remained in the AI and computer science fields, drafting and prosecuting patent applications taking into account the nuances of pursuing computer- and software-related subject-matter in different jurisdictions around the world. He has particular experience with technical areas including machine learning (e.g. neural networks and genetic algorithms), augmented reality systems, computer and data security (e.g. encryption/decryption algorithms, blockchain and distributed ledger technologies), computer network protocols and architectures, image processing/recognition, database optimisation, user interfaces and control systems, media streaming protocols, and FinTech.

In addition, Alvin regularly advises and assists clients with global patent portfolio management and filing strategy advice, as well as prior art and freedom to operate searching and assessment. He is acutely aware of budget and time pressures faced by all clients and has helped to develop bespoke in-house reporting and forecasting tools to assist clients grow and manage patent portfolios effectively.
