Maucher Jenkins partners attend EPO conference on “The role of patents in an AI driven world"

Date: 21 December 2020

Partners Holly Whitlock (mathematician) and Alvin Lam (computer scientist) attended the EPO online conference “The role of patents in an AI driven world”.

Recordings are available here

Alvin noted an interesting session (day 2, 0:07) with the British inventor Steve Lindsey, CEO of Lontra, regarding “the path from patenting his revolutionary new compressor to the development of a smart factory”.

Alvin comments:

“Very practical and insightful examples of how they are using machine learning to improve optimisation of their compressor designs and operational efficiencies, and also in predicting/detecting faults. No issues with patentability (“technicality”) given such ‘tangible’ effects.”

Another session (day 2, 0:33), concerns ELLIS, an institution with goals to maintain Europe as a prestigious centre for AI-based R&D and industrial partnerships, who are also working with the EPO. The co-founder and VP of ELLIS confirmed that the UK (which has four member institutions) will remain an important part of the ELLIS network, which is not confined to EU member states. Holly noted that the UK is third, after US and CN, in the AI Research Rankings (0:37.41).
