Overview:

Thomas is specialized in technical IP rights in the field of artificial intelligence. He regularly drafts and prosecutes patent applications for inventions related to the structure, training and applications of neural networks. This includes AI based frequency analysis, Computer Vision, and solutions for secure AI operation.

In addition, Thomas advises clients in all matters of patent law – from start-ups to large companies, from German medium-sized companies to international corporations. His work includes obtaining German, European and international intellectual property rights and conducting legal proceedings, as well as preparing freedom-to-operate analyses and advising on the development of portfolio strategies and in the area of employee invention law.

As a physicist, he is qualified in a wide range of technical fields, in particular in the areas of laser technology and optics. He has extensive experience in the patenting of inventions in microelectronics, photovoltaics and medical technology. Especially, he is involved in the patenting of computer-implemented inventions, both in the field of artificial intelligence and in related fields.

Thomas joined the Munich office of Maucher Jenkins in 2019. He qualified as a German and European patent attorney, as well as a European trademark and design attorney, in 2023. In 2024, he obtained a master’s degree (LL.M.) in European Intellectual Property Law and admission to the Unified Patent Court.

After studying physics in Jena and Grenoble (France), he initially worked in fundamental research. During this time, he investigated semiconductor materials for infrared detection. He also developed supersonic gas jets and later specialized in the field of laser-plasma interaction. He received his PhD from the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf and the École Polytechnique in Palaiseau with a thesis on laser-based ion acceleration and plasma-assisted laser pulse amplification.

Thomas is a member of the Federal Association of German Patent Attorneys (BDPA).
