Overview:
Joachim Rüttgers is with Maucher Jenkins since the year 2026 after
having practiced IP law as a patent attorney and partner in an IP law firm for nearly 30 years.
He is a graduate physicist and holds a Ph.D. in the field of laser spectroscopy. After a one-year research stay in France on a grant from the German Research Foundation, he has been working in the field of intellectual property since 1992 and was admitted as a German and European Patent Attorney in 1996. Joachim is also admitted to practice before the Unified Patent Court (UPC).
The main focus of his work as a patent attorney is drafting patent applications and conducting patent examination proceedings, opposition proceedings against granted patents, filing trademark applications, obtaining design registrations and advising on employee invention matters.
Joachim’s technical specialties are mechanical engineering, fastening technology, medical technology, measuring technology, optics, optical spectroscopy and laser technology.
Joachim was entrusted with a long-term mandate as a deeply involved head of the patent department of a medium-sized, internationally positioned company with an extensive patent portfolio. This position gave him valuable insight into how intellectual property issues are handled within companies.
In addition to teaching at various universities on invitation, he regularly supports pro bono projects such as the well-known German youth science competition “jugend forscht” as a juror and advisor to university start-ups.
Interests outside of work:
In his spare time, Joachim highly enjoys biking in the Black Forest, preferably in the early morning hours, while in the evening he relaxes practicing cello, thereby playing inter alia baroque pieces.
